Sarasota Paradise delivered a resilient defensive performance Saturday night, battling league leaders Union Omaha to a 1-1 draw and securing a valuable point on the road.
Omaha entered the match unbeaten in its previous five league contests and riding a 21-game home unbeaten streak dating back to 2025. Despite the challenge, Paradise absorbed the pressure, executed its game plan and nearly left Omaha with all three points.
Sarasota struck first in the 27th minute with a perfectly executed corner kick. Andres Rodriguez curled a delivery toward the back post, finding the game’s Player To Watch Callum Stretch. The center back was able to create separation and made firm contact on the ball with his right foot, firing it past Omaha goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu to give Paradise a 1-0 advantage.
The goal capped a disciplined opening half for Sarasota, whose defense completely shut down Omaha’s attack. Paradise conceded zero shots on target through the opening 45 minutes, consistently disrupting Omaha’s buildup and protecting its lead.
Omaha increased the pressure after halftime, but goalkeeper Alex Sutton repeatedly answered the challenge. Early in the second half, Sutton launched himself across goal to deny Sergio Ors Navarro and preserve Sarasota’s advantage.
The save sparked a surge from Paradise, which used its defensive stability to launch dangerous counterattacks and push into the final third. Sarasota nearly doubled its lead in the 59th minute when Sutton caught an Omaha corner and immediately launched the ball downfield. His distribution found Jonathan Bolanos near midfield, sending the forward racing toward goal before he pulled his shot just wide of the left post.
Sutton again came through in the 69th minute, deflecting an Omaha effort onto the crossbar before Sarasota’s defense cleared the rebound. The Paradise back line continued to withstand Omaha’s pressure as the clock ticked toward full time, recording 30 clearances in the defensive third while Sutton finished with five saves.
After keeping the league leaders off the scoreboard for more than 90 minutes, Paradise finally conceded in the third minute of stoppage time. Pato Botella Faz controlled a ball in the box with his chest before calmly slotting it past Sutton to level the match at 1-1.
While the late equalizer denied Sarasota a road victory, the performance showcased Paradise’s defensive resolve and ability to compete with one of the league’s top sides under sustained pressure.
After earning a point against the league leaders on the road, Paradise will look to carry that momentum into its next two challenges.
