In a dramatic inaugural appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Sarasota Paradise suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to FC Naples, with a decisive goal in the dying moments of the game.
The first half was characterized by numerous opportunities for both sides, but it was the second half that truly ignited the contest. In the 68th minute, Sarasota Paradise was awarded a penalty kick. Midfielder Christopher Solari stepped up to take the shot, aiming for the bottom right corner, but FC Naples’ goalkeeper, Edward “Lalo” Delgado, made a crucial save to keep it all level.
FC Naples broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when forward Karsen Henderlong found the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Undeterred, Sarasota Paradise intensified their efforts for an equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the 88th minute when substitute Nico Colacci, after seeing his initial attempt blocked, converted the rebound to level the score, sending the home fans at Premier Sports Campus into rapturous celebration.
However, the elation was short-lived. In the 91st minute, a blocked cross fell to FC Naples’ Kevin O’Connor, who capitalized on the opportunity to score the winning goal. The closing moments of the game saw further drama as Sarasota’s Jivan Rodriguez received a red card following a foul and subsequent altercation, reducing the home side to ten men.
Despite the loss, the game was historic for Sarasota Paradise, with a record attendance of 2,248 fans and a first goal at the new home venue. Fans can look forward to future encounters between these two teams as the Sarasota Paradise will join USL League One in 2026.
